“What are they hiding?” I ask.
Jonathon leans in, inches from my face, murmuring so fast I have to strain to catch his words. “This is going to sound mad. The other night… I followed Gentile into the corn.”
My eyebrows rise. Voices and shouting come from the antechamber as the barrister and chief inspector do battle. “Quickly, man!”
“I… I think the corn transports people to… another time.”
“What?”
“I followed him to the center of the corn. And… a mist rolled in. And then there was a foghorn, and the sound of a maritime bell. Like I was seaside. Gentile walked in a few feet but seemed as if he could go no farther—could merely watch.”
I sit down, my eyes never leaving Jonathon’s face.
“I… saw a massive ship. The likes of which I have never seen here. And it… was sparking and crackling, like lightning was wound round its hull. Like St. Elmo’s Fire.”
I cock my head.
“St. Elmo’s Fire is a strange, blue—”
“I am well aware. My cousin was a sailor. He sketched it for me many a time, crawling like ivy up the sides of a ship… It sounds mad.”
He paces. “I know. I know. I have questioned my own sanity since that very night. And then Patient Zero appeared. And Gentile was not surprised—he seemed to be expecting him. They watched together as that ship disappeared from the harbor… and the fog dissipated. I nearly had to run to get out of sight. Gentile and Patient Zero are up to something dark. Something most unnatural.”
“What has this to do with Jane?” Footsteps.
“Grayjoy, that is enough. You can see him tomorrow during visiting hours,” the chief inspector booms, talking quickly for us.
As he spins on his heel, he murmurs quickly, “Maybe everything.”

Life for Patient 29 is full of medicated day dreams of a life outside the walls of Soothing Hills Asylum. But fantasies are not all that consume her. A monster roams the halls of the sanitarium she reluctantly calls home and three girls have been found dead. The dead girls share one common thread . . . each was 29's cell mate. As the investigation gets under way, she retreats into her mind, listening to the voices that call to her. She is endowed with the cursed gift of perception. Through it, she hears messages carried upon the notes of music, discerns words hidden among the strokes of paintings, and minds pleadings for help from the corn field outside.
Could the key to the murders lie within 29's broken mind? Mason, an orderly, does not see 29 as a lunatic and as his belief in her grows so does her self-confidence. The possibility of one day leaving the asylum seems less and less like a fantasy. But the monster has other plans for her. Leaving will not be so easy, at least not while she is alive.
