Book Summary

The dead have been waiting for her…

Addison Beckett tries hard to pretend she’s normal, but she’s far from it. Since she was six years old, she’s seen the world around her unraveling, as if someone is pulling a thread from a sweater and it’s all slowly coming undone. When she ignores it, it goes away, so that’s what she does.

Enter her arrogant-but-hot professor Asher Green. He knows all about her special brand of crazy. In fact, he might be just as nuts as she is. Asher insists that the dead from a parallel dimension are trying to possess the living in this one. And since Addison seems to be the only one who can see these “wraiths,” she just might be the key to saving the world.

Addison wants nothing to do with Asher or his secret society, The Mortal Machine. But as their animosity grows, she finds it harder and harder to ignore the chemistry between them. And when she discovers that Machine laws forbid her from touching him, she realizes that’s all she wants to do.

Stop the wraiths. Break the rules. Save the world. All in a day’s work.

Normal was overrated, anyway.

ARC Review

The characters

Addison Beckett is the newest addition to the New Adult Paranormal genre and I couldn't be happier! Throughout the book she evolves as a character. She starts as a shy college student who depends on her father, which is not such a bad thing because she's lost her mother, and as the story proceeds she turns into a badass heroine who can see and fight dark, creepy creatures named wraiths. These entities have been chasing her, trying to get into our world and making it theirs since she was a little girl. One moment she could be in the library, a classroom or her dorm and be normal and the next moment the walls could be forming into dark holes that came out of nowhere or she could feel the temperature drop and shadows move around and touch her fellow classmates.

For all these years she managed to keep that a secret. But when Asher Green ,her serious, jerk and totally hot professor, gives her a mysterious book and orders her to read it right away, she realizes he's not just a pretty face. There were moments that I wanted to hit him and call him names because of his cruelty and the way he treated Addison but there were also good moments where he treated her with respect because of her abilities and maybe something else as well? While reading Darkside Sun, the reader realizes that Asher's past is full of sadness, loneliness and as a character he has his own fears, doubts and insecurities, things that make his character genuine.

Hands down, nobody can deny the spark and connection between these two. The thing is once you go through the initiation ceremony and become part of the Mortal Machine, the organization that's been guarding and keeping us safe for centuries, its members are not allowed to touch one another or have any kind of relationship, which makes things incredibly difficult for our main characters but emotions are more powerful than any law...

Verdict

Darkside Sun is an action packed, adventurous first book in a promising New Adult series with unique characters, an interesting plot, a forbidden romance, numerous twists and an ending that will definitely make you want to continue this series!
