Cali pointed in her brother’s face. “You said we’d be home by now.”
Kody grunted and turned, crossing his arms. “But what if—"
“No! Stop! Raelyn made her choice! What are we supposed to do, chase after her?”
“You don’t know anything about this area!” Kody bellowed, “Overnight she could die from dehydration in the desert, be abducted by a sex trafficking organization, get lost in a desert storm, or eaten by whatever animals are roaming out there at night.” Images of Raelyn’s dead body lying in the desert flashed through his mind, and his gut clenched tight.
“She should’ve thought about that beforehand,” said Cali.
“We need to convince the villagers to lend us their Jeep.”
Kody jogged away, with Cali following. He ran past some kids playing and dashed back toward the hut. When he swung the hut door open, he threw Cali’s backpack over his shoulder.
Cali looked around the tent. “Wait. She took Liam with her? Why did she leave me?” Her jaw dropped. “That sneaky little squirrel.”
A group of villagers scurried over, yelling in Arabic.
Cali moved behind him and whispered. “Uh, bro, they took our guns.”
“I can see that,” Kody spoke over his shoulder. “They’re our friends. They won’t hurt us. Meet in my hut.”
Her footsteps scurried away.
The wind wafted enticing scents of breakfast, and his stomach rumbled. He couldn’t guess the name of the foreign spice, but he’d eat just about anything after he’d gone so long without a decent meal. Other friendly locals were mounting horses.
“Our Jeep is gone.” The man who shared his family’s dinner with them the previous night rushed forward, looking terrified.
“I’ll help you find it.” Kody nodded. “I think I know where it’s headed.”
“No, you stay here and protect the little ones. We don’t have enough horses.”
Swearing under his breath, Kody nodded, then jogged to his hut and flung open the door. “Cali, we need to–”
Silence.
The hut was empty.
“Cali?”
Her small footprints were imprinted in the dirt, along with a larger set. Kody spotted a faint line of sand across the ground where someone was dragged.
“No. No. No!” Kody followed the trail to the tiny bathroom area in the back, where a hole was ripped open in the hut’s wall. In the distance, a horse galloped away, and Cali’s long ebony braids flopped in the air. He grabbed his pack from the floor and chased after them until their silhouettes disappeared.
The sun melted his eyes, sweat beaded down his face, his lungs craved air, and his legs turned to jelly. Panting, Kody dropped hard to his knees in complete exhaustion, hopelessness, and panic combined into a heart-racing package of fear.
How can I save both of them?
The sandstorm accelerated, threatening to swallow everything he loved.
