Summary

Truth, like love, isn’t always obvious.

Seventeen-year-old Ruby Brooks has never had a boyfriend. After moving to small-town La Luna, New Mexico following her mother’s untimely death, boys aren’t even on her radar. Ruby just wants to forget the last horrible year and blend in. But when she discovers an ancient pueblo ruin hidden in the forest behind her house, and meets Ezra, a bitter recluse whose once-perfect face was destroyed in an accident he won’t talk about; Angel, the town’s handsome sheriff’s deputy, and Leo, a stranger who only appears in the forest, Ruby finds herself caught between love, mystery, and other worlds. What happened to Ezra’s face? And why is she so attracted to the one boy in town everyone despises? As Ruby unravels her own powerful connections to both Ezra and the pueblo ruin, she’ll learn surfaces are deceiving. Especially in the heart of New Mexico, where ghosts and legends aren’t always just campfire stories.

Review

Ruby Brooks grew up in a dysfunctional family. The only person she could rely on was her aunt, so  ten months after Ruby's mother death, she decides to move to the enchanting small town of La Luna in New Mexico in order to pick up their pieces and start fresh. But nobody informed them about the spiritual secrets the town holds. As soon as they arrive, Ruby becomes the talk of the town, which is something completely normal for newcomers but she also experiences strange events and encounters things that don't look so normal. As a result, she starts questioning her sanity, what is real, what is fantasy and what is a little bit of both. She's determined to find out and that will be the adventure of a lifetime.

Apart from that, she also has to deal with classic teenage problems, such as friendship, trust, boys and relationships. Three different guys are attracted to her, each one with their own past and secrets.

The story picks up after the first half of the book. It's a beautifully written story, full of mystery, romance and twists that make the reader keep reading until the end. The breathtaking landscape of New Mexico and the folklore mentioned, makes Between Wild and Ruin a high recommended read for YA Paranormal Romance readers! The story ends with unaswered questions, which I hope will be answered in the next installment!
