An excerpt from Silent Orchids…

It takes place right after Kaeleigh, the main character, had a bad dream (or was it just a dream? ;)…

Taken from Chapter 8

The laughter accompanied with casual conversation, enabled her to relax in the ease of their friendship. Kaeleigh gathered the cards to be put away and yawned as the need for sleep hit her once again. Getting up from the couch, Finn grabbed an extra blanket out of the closet.
“I guess I’ll take one of these toss pillows,” Finn joked and promptly tossed it to the couch.
“Throw pillows,” Kaeleigh corrected, “Decorative throw pillows to be exact.”
“Oh, excuse me then,” Finn rolled his eyes. “You won’t mind if I throw them then will you?” And with that, he threw two more much like you’d throw a baseball, if a baseball were several times more square and tasseled.
Kaeleigh watched in mock horror as he threw her pretty pillows so rough… so… so like a boy! “What are you doing, Finn?”
“Go to bed, Kae, I’ll sleep on the couch to keep you company in case you have another bad dream or need anything,” Finn said and headed back to the couch to his makeshift bed.
Kaeleigh got into her bed, feeling slightly guilty that one of her best friends, who had been so great to her tonight when she needed a friend, was going to sleep on her springy and not-so-comfortable-for-sleeping couch. After all, things seemed back to normal and Finn had spent the night before and it was no big deal, although Chel was usually there too. He’ll be fine out there on the couch. The couch squeaked as Finn plopped himself down and made himself comfortable, or at least tried. Every time he turned over or adjusted his position on the couch, it squeaked.  Ughh! I’ll never get any sleep with all that racket out there.
“Finn, you don’t have to stay out there.” Kaeleigh’s shout sounded muffled from under her comforter.
“I’m fine, I’m not leaving you tonight. You’re still a bit shaken up, I’ll stay the night... or what’s left of it,” Finn replied in a tired voice.
“No, I mean you don’t have to sleep out there on the couch, there’s plenty of room in here,” Kaeleigh said, looking at her king-sized bed.
“I’m good, Kae. Go to sleep.” Finn yawned.
“Please, Finn?” A slight tremor in her voice revealed the depth of her fear at returning to sleep.
“Well,” Finn began as he rose from the couch, “Your bed is more comfortable, but only if you’re fine with it.” He leaned against the doorframe into her bedroom. “You can’t tell Chel we had a slumber party without her though, she’ll never forgive us for that,” he said with a playful grin as he walked in her room.
“Tell me about it! She hates to feel like she’s missed anything. The other day when we had lunch without her she went on and on about it that whole day,” Kaeleigh rambled dramatically. “It’s our secret,” she said, scooting over to the far side of the bed to give Finn space. Her room wasn’t that big, but when Chel had lived there they had decided to share so they made the king bed fit. It always made them laugh when they reminisced about their acrobatic maneuvers attempting to get it in the door and turned properly inside the room. Smiling, she thought, See, totally normal, no big deal. Then she heard his belt buckle as he was taking it off. Kaeleigh quickly flipped over and froze. Her gaze fixated at the opposite wall, blushing like a little girl at the thought of a boy in her room taking his clothes off. Nervously, she smoothed the hair away from her eyes and clutched her pillow within her talons. Why am I freaking out? Realizing Finn was laughing, she rolled slightly back toward him.
“What’s so funny?”
“You.” He looked in her eyes and took in her face with a humorous twinkle in his eyes, but there was also a hint of something else—something resembling desire. “Don’t worry, I’m just taking off my belt.” He held it up for her to inspect. “It’s uncomfortable, but everything else is staying on unless…” Finn waggled his eyebrows suggestively at her, “you want it to come off, Kaeleigh,” he said teasing her but equally making fun of her. Kaeleigh’s mouth fell open in mocked shock.
“Shut up and go to sleep.” She threw a pillow at him and rolled back over. Of course he’d be the perfect gentleman. At least she was pretty sure he would be. “Good night, Finn, thanks for being here.”
“That’s what I’m here for.” Finn lay down on his side of the bed and got comfortable. “Maybe my being here will keep the bad guy in your dreams away.” He paused. “Good night, Kae.” Finn rolled the opposite direction, but did not fall right to sleep. His eyes wide, realization hit Finn that he had slipped. Hopefully Kaeleigh had too much to think about that she would not catch what he had said, but he knew her better than that. Something was changing and it killed him that he couldn’t talk to her about it. If he could only get her to talk to him about it.
Kaeleigh smiled, fully satisfied from the middle of the night fun. As she drifted asleep his last words about the bad guy kept rolling through her mind.
I don’t remember saying there was a bad guy...

Top 10 Favorite Books

Hello and thank you for having me today!!

I’m going to share with you my top 10 favorite books. Ok so individual books were too hard so I picked favorite series (which was still hard!!) There’s just SO MANY!!!

I chose these as my faves because they are series that I have (and will still) read over and over again…I LOVE them that much. I also mainly chose YA books because well that is mainly what I read, but that is also the genre my current book is in so I thought it was fitting (okay, okay I’m trying to figure out ways of narrowing my options ;)

I also love these because they all have strong female leads (ok so HP obviously is a male lead but hello… Hermione rocks!) Girl power!! ;) AND they have (again other than HP…ok so there’s a little but not enough to really count) good fun romance to them too. They are also about, yes it’s the coming of age, but I also like to call it the journey of becoming who they are meant to be. And you may notice they are all either paranormal and/or fantasy because I LOVE it J

So without further ado, and in no particular order…

1. The Nightshade Novels by Andrea Cremer
2. The Witchling series by Lizzy Ford
3. Harry Potter by JK Rowling (did I even need to say this ;)
4. The Fire Spirits series by Samantha Young
5. Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa
6. The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare
7. The Grey Wolves series by Quinn Loftis
8. The Darkest Powers Trilogy by Kelley Armstrong (her adult series too)
9. Keegan’s Chronicles by Julia Crane
10. The Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs (adult series)

I’m sure there are others that I LOVE just as much, but this is a good sampling of my bookshelf. If you haven’t read some of these, I would definitely recommend any and ALL of them :)
