BOOK SUMMARY

It’s all fun and games

I had a simple plan for spring break.

Sun, sand, and a hot guy. Sex on the beach, with no strings attached.

A chance to get rid of this pesky virginity once and for all.

And when I met Tyler McKenna, I thought I had it made.

Until someone gets hurt.

But then girls started turning up at Key West landmarks. Girls who looked like me, but with one crucial difference: They’d all been drugged and relieved of their virginity.

The virginity I still have. The virginity Ty refuses to take.
And now I’ve begun to wonder whether there isn’t more to him than meets the eye.

Suddenly, sex on the beach doesn’t sound so good anymore...

Author Interview with Jenna Bennett

Thank you so much for answering my questions Jenna!

Thanks for asking! It’s a pleasure being here. :)

Where have we seen you before?

LOL! I guess that depends on where you’ve been looking. :) I’ve been writing mysteries for Penguin/Berkley Prime Crime for the past five years. The Do It Yourself home renovation mysteries, currently seven books strong. I’ve been self-publishing since 2011: the Savannah Martin mysteries, also seven books strong, plus a novella, and a couple of unrelated works. And I’ve written two books for Entangled Publishing: Fortune’s Hero, a science fiction romance (first in another series), and Tall, Dark & Divine, about Eros, Greek god of love, and the woman who picks him up for a one-night-stand.

Sex on the Beach...three amazing stories from three talented bestselling authors! Tell us the story behind this project!

It was Jennifer and Jen’s idea, I just jumped on the bandwagon after they came up with it. :) Originally, they wanted to write a continuity – an interconnected series – about three writers on a retreat. Straight adult romance. But after Jen McLaughlin’s success with Out of Line last fall, it morphed into an NA trilogy about three college girls on spring break instead.

It’s a “no holds barred, no rules, just write what you want” kind of series: each of us would have the opportunity to write exactly the story we wanted, with no curtailment or “you can’t do that” from any of the others. It’s been a ton of fun, and I think we came up with a pretty good little series, too. The books are very different, just as we’re very different—and just as our characters are very different. It’s been a blast the whole way through!

Your story is called Before You and your heroine id Cassie. Did she give you a hard time while writing Before You?

Not at all. I’ve written so much first person past tense, that it comes very easily to me – all the mysteries are written that way; sixteen of them so far – and Cassie was very easy to deal with. She knew exactly who she was and what she was doing. I just had to write it down. :)

What do you like most about writing for this age group?

It’s been a few years since I fell into that demographic myself, and it’s nice to go back and visit. There’s a freshness and newness to being that age, just out of the teen years, no longer a child but not yet comfortably an adult, either. It’s a time of starting to figure out how to be a grown-up. There’s all that freedom to do whatever you want. And all the responsibility that goes with it. It’s just an age of so much opportunity, where everything seems possible.

From starting writing books to becoming a recognized author, it’s a long way. How was it when you first started?

I was one of the lucky ones, I think. It was fairly easy. I wrote a first book, used it to find an agent, six months later she got me a contract with Penguin, and I was set. The first book was released in 2008. It was all print-books back then; the real push for digital took another couple of years. I started self-publishing in 2011, and haven’t looked back. :)

What are you currently reading?

One of the In Death books by JD Robb, aka Nora Roberts. :)

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

I'm working on the 8th Savannah Martin mystery. In it, Savannah goes back to her hometown of Sweetwater, Tennessee, for her high school reunion. Minus her boyfriend, the boy Savannah's mother - and every other woman in Sweetwater - warned their daughters about. There are a few dead bodies and some of the usual intrigue, and there's Savannah realizing how far she's come in the ten years since she left high school.

Here's a snippet form the beginning of chapter 2, when the cat-the news about the unsuitable boyfriend-is out of the bag.

“You have a new boyfriend?” Charlotte sounded halfway intrigued, and halfway hurt that I hadn’t told her.
I ignored her. “How do you know about that?” I asked Mary Kelly instead.
She smiled, her eyes glittering. “Everyone knows. It’s the talk of Sweetwater.”
Great.
Then again, I probably shouldn’t be surprised. Margaret Anne Martin’s perfect daughter carrying on with LaDonna Collier’s good-for-nothing colored boy is the kind of grist the gossip mill lives for.
“Why is Sweetwater talking about it?” Tina wanted to know. “Are you finally kicking that good
girl image, Savannah?”
Oh, hell, yes. In a big way.
“Who’s the lucky guy?” Charlotte still sounded hurt, but curious too.
“Rafe Collier,” I said.
There was total silence around the table as they all gawked at me. I don’t know why Mary Kelly was staring. She’d already known, or so she said. But maybe she’d thought it was just a rumor. Or maybe she was surprised I’d admitted it.
“Oh, my God!” Tina managed, eventually. “You’re dating him?”

Any tips for aspiring authors?

Read a lot. Every genre, not just the one you think you want to write in. And not just good books, but bad ones, too. You need to be able to tell the difference. Good writing sinks in, sort of like osmosis, if you read enough of it. And then write a lot. It takes a lot of words to become a good writer. A bit of talent doesn’t hurt, but mostly it’s just a lot of work. AIC = ass in chair. Rinse. Repeat.

Thank you for your time! :)

Thanks for having me here! It was a pleasure visiting!

She acts like she’s just a normal girl and I’m just a normal guy, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. My past isn’t pretty, you know. I did what I had to do to survive, and she’d run if she learned the truth about my darkness. But with her, I’m finally realizing what it’s like to be alive. To laugh, live, and be happy.

BOOK SUMMARY

CAN FUN IN THE SUN TURN INTO LASTING LOVE?

Spring break in Key West with my besties was supposed to be casual fun. But I never expected to meet James Hunt. Sex and frolic? Yes! A relationship? No. But his hot blue eyes and confident manner drew me in. And when he let me see the man behind the mask, I fell hard, foolishly believing there could be a future for us. Of course I never considered our relationship might be based on lies...or that his betrayal could rock my foundation and make me question everything I believed in...

OR WILL A LIFE BUILT ON LIES RUIN EVERYTHING?

The moment I saw Quinn I knew I had to have her. She hooked me with her cool eyes and don’t touch me attitude. I had it all, money, social status, and looks. I could get any girl I wanted...until her. When my friends challenged me with a bet to get her into bed by the end of the week, I couldn’t pass it up. But sex wasn’t supposed to turn into love. She wasn’t supposed to change me, push me, and make me want more for myself. She wasn’t supposed to wreck me in all ways. And now, if I can’t turn my lies into truth, I just might lose her forever...
