“I have never been useless in my life…”

Rescued from a life of servitude by the boy she loves, Susanna Marsh escapes across two centuries, only to be plunged into a world she’s ill-prepared to face. Unable to work or go to school, Susanna finds herself dependent on others to survive.

Immersed in the fun and demands of his senior year of high school, Mark Lewis longs to share his world with the girl who’s captured his heart. But first he must tackle government bureaucracy to prove Susanna’s identity.

Overwhelmed by her new home, Susanna seeks refuge in history and in news of the people she left behind. But when she learns that danger stalks her sister, Susanna must weigh whether to risk her own future in order to save Phoebe’s happiness.

Author Interview

Susanna and Mark’s story continues. Tell us a few things about it!

A Whisper In Time begins 5 weeks after Whisper Falls ends. (If you haven’t read book 1, minor spoiler alert!)  It’s taken Susanna several weeks to recover from her brush with death. In her new century, she’s feels overwhelmed—a bit like an immigrant from a deprived place. She’s never had running water, electricity, or technology. She dropped out of school at age 10—and, without proof of where she was born, she can’t get an ID, a job, or an education.  Just as she needs Mark most, he returns to school.

It’s tough for Mark too. He loves Susanna and knows that taking care of her is a huge commitment. Yet he really wants to enjoy his senior year, hang out with friends, and choose the right college. The two most important parts of his life are pulling him in different directions.

Then, of course, we can’t forget the people Susanna left behind—especially her little sister Phoebe!

How did you create the characters for the Whisper Falls series?

I started with Susanna. I knew I wanted to write about a girl who was smart, capable, and able to prevail over the injustice that she lived with. To survive in a brutal system like indentured servitude, she would also have to be very good at controlling her emotions and willing to deceive to protect what she loves.

Once I knew who Susanna was, I had to create a guy who was worthy of her. I wanted Mark to appear to be an ordinary teen on the surface, but to have depth that nobody had completely discovered yet. For Susanna’s sake, he needed to understand how it felt to be treated badly, so I put bullying in his past. But where she is repressed, I wanted him to be open and affectionate, which meant he needed a strong relationship with his family.

And that was all it took. From there, I just threw situations at them and let their personalities take over.

What do you like most about writing for this age group?

I love how much I get to ignore “the rules.” Teen fiction allows an author to mash up all sorts of elements into the same story.  Fiction in other age groups have more of a formula, but YA readers are willing to follow YA authors wherever we go, as long as the story is good.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

I have two books releasing this fall.  Whispers From the Past is the conclusion to Mark and Susanna’s story. I Wish is the first book in a new series. I’m finishing edits on both books now.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

That’s a great question, and the quick response is: tell authors what you want to read.

Do you want more romance? Mysteries? Historical fiction? Do you like cliff-hangers (or hate them as much as I do)? Should we be setting more stories in Asia or Europe or Antarctica? What are you tired of?

To a certain extent, readers do inform us of what they want by what they buy. But I would love to hear more! Are we missing something that you would love to try? Send me email. DM me through goodreads. Tell me what you like about my books or other authors’ books. Tell me what you don’t like. Give us feedback that lets us know what you’re hungry for.

What’s next for you?

I’ve been working on two stories that are pure contemporaries. No magical elements anywhere (except that finding a person you love and who loves you back is pretty magical.)

The first story is a multi-cultural Romeo & Juliet between a rich Indian guy and a poor trailer-trash girl. The second manuscript focuses on a cyber-romance between a sheltered girl in NC and a teen soldier stationed  in Africa. They stumble over a small mystery at his base, which quickly explodes into something much bigger.

And, naturally, I have to get to work on the sequels to I Wish. That will keep me busy through 2016.

Thank you for your time! :)
