Synopsis

Stella's future was set, and it was a bright one. She was engaged to a man she adored, and was headed to law school in the fall. Tragically, her perfectly planned future ends just as it was beginning.

With no ties to family or friends, Stella finds herself alone in a new city, spiraling out of control. Her typical day comes to a close with her passed out on the floor; sometimes clothed.

Luckily, her new roommate, essentially a stranger, is dead set on getting Stella past her grief and back to functioning within society. Putting one foot in front of the other, she climbs up from the bottom of a bottle. Even with all her progress, Stella walks through life unfeeling, numb. Defiant, she sends out warning signals for the world to keep away. But, is that what she really wants?

With the steadfast help of a few tight knit friends, she gradually begins to feel again. She starts to savor the flavor of food again; lets herself notice how the handsome bartender glances at her. Still, after allowing herself a fling, she wonders if she will ever be able to let go of her shattered past, fully enjoy the present, or get over what she thought would be her perfect future and with the man who destroyed her heart.

The characters

Stella is one brave girl.In the beginning of the book there's an explosion and  a set of unforgettable eyes stare at her while that person shoots her right in the chest. That's where her story begins. She's happily engaged and ready to start her life in Washington with Jack, the love of her life, when suddenly an accident costs the life of her fiance and leaves her all alone in a city she's never been before and living with two guys,Patrick and Billy who she hasn't even properly met.

She's broken, devastated and unable to move on.But Patrick doesn't want this life for her. So,for one year they let her grieve. There are days that she doesn't eat anything, stays in her room and drinks as much as she can to soothe her shattered heart. That's all she gets. One year.

Then one day,she realizes that Jack is gone and he's never coming back but she still remains here. She needs to get her life back and her plan starts with attending law school, where she meets one of the best friends,Millie, who understands and supports her.

Two years after Jack's death, she's still not ready to be in a relationship or hasn't even thought about being able to ever love anybody else. But a no stings attached relationship? That she can do.And she does with George, the guy she met her first week in Washington who turned out to be the bartender of the bar she,Millie,Patrick and Billy spent countless hours over the last two years. But George wants more and he's trying to make Stella feel whole again.

He's a really nice guy.He waited for her for two years before he even made a move.He agreed to the kind of relationship that made Stella happy. But he has strong and deep feelings for her and he stayed away from her for a very long time when Stella asked him to.He respected that. But love is a feeling that can't stay hidden. And this time he's determined to make her his forever.

But when Stella gets shot and discovers a secret that was buried for more than five years, she wishes she was dead.
